Fall / Winter 2012 Catch Up Part 2: The Lumineers

I closed out 2012 with one of the year’s most popular new bands, The Lumineers. Their self-titled, debut record went Gold in only 7 months, backed by mega-hit singles “Ho Hey” and “Stubborn Love”. The band (and crew) are wonderful and sweet and energetic and I’m very happy to have been able to spend two short weeks with them.

During those two weeks we supported Dave Matthews Band in some of the biggest venues I’ve ever been in, played two sold out headline shows supported by local radio stations, recorded a segment for iHeartRadio, and played another two sold out shows to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the band’s home base of Denver, CO. It was an incredible adventure and I managed to capture some awesome photos.

2012 was an incredible year. I met some incredible people, saw some amazing shows, and traveled over 70,000 miles on tour. Here’s to hoping 2013 only gets better.

Fall / Winter 2012 Catch Up Part 1: Punch Brothers

I spent much of the Fall of 2012 with modern bluegrass virtuosos, Punch Brothers. The band toured relentlessly from September through December and I was lucky enough to join them for 6 weeks of that time. Below are some of my favorite shots during the two tours I spent with them.

Spending so much time with one group allows me the unique opportunity to shoot details and nuances in their live show. I like to leave the standard shots up to the local photographers – who I often try to coach or point towards a particular band member when I know a solo or photogenic moment is coming up. I’m also gifted with full time access to the band, allowing me to capture shots of them preparing for their taping on Conan O’brien’s TV show, backstage rehearsals, and big wide shots of empty venues prior to the band’s soundcheck. Or one of my favorite shots from this fall: banjo player Noam Pikelny inspecting his instrument on the tour bus after it was dropped after a show in New Orelans, LA.

Missy Higgins @ Wonder Ballroom

I shot a few photos while selling merch for Missy Higgins, Katie Herzig, and Butterfly Boucher last night, at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom. My recently purchased Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 destroyed this show. Most of my shots were taken while standing behind the merch table at the very back of the room. I’m really happy with the results and can’t wait to use the lens out on the road. Thanks to my friend Gavin for inviting me to the show. Photos after the jump.

Lera Lynn @ Mississippi Studios

My friends Lera Lynn and Ben Lewis played at Mississippi Studios here in Portland this past weekend. It was great seeing them again, especially in such an intimate atmostphere. The show was also my first with my new 70-200mm f/2.8 lens – which was probably overkill for the small space. Check out the photos and a couple of Lera’s music videos after the jump.

Bonnaroo 2012

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been two weeks since Bonnaroo. I’ve been pouring over hundreds of photos I took over the two days I spent at the festival. I must have seen 30-some bands play, somehow managed not to get sunburnt, and ran into a ton of old friends and colleagues. Check out some of my favorite shots after the jump. Finally – I managed to get a new portfolio up and running! I’ll post occasional updates with new photos and update my portfolio as necessary. I’m still looking for a suitable method to sell prints of my work to those interested. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I’ll be out on tour for much of this summer, bouncing between Josh Ritter and Punch Brothers tours (see dates below).
